S. J Turner (F.R.G.S.)

S. J. Turner was a cartographer and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society who was commissioned in the 1930s by Shoesmith & Etheridge to create some maps for postcards depicting a 20 mile radius around mostly Sussex coastal towns. These were published as standard-size postcards, some with deckle-edging, some in black and white and many in colour with a considerable variation in colours over subsequent print-runs. In 1966 Shoesmith & Etheridge sold their postcards to D. V. Bennett who continued to print the designs, some expanded to continental size, some with borders, and generally with bolder colours. In addition, S. J. Turner was commissioned by Nigh in the 1960s to create the (now famous) map of the Isle of Wight which has been used to the present day in both black & white and colour on many of Nigh's postcards. At some point (uncertain when), Coates Nene Series commissioned the map of Cambridge featuring a 50 mile radius, and similarly, Friths had an Oxford map also with a 50 mile radius. S. J. Turner also produced at least one other postcard for an unknown publisher of Port Sunlight in Merseyside (Cheshire).
