The
Bill started out as a crime drama series in 1984 following a pilot episode
titled "Woodentop" broadcast in 1983. After three seasons,
the series became a soap from 1988, initially as three half hour episodes
per week then two one hour episodes per week until the series ended
on 31 August 2010. Six books were published by Thames Mandarin. In 1997,
Puffin Books published four junior novels.
