Sexton
Blake is a fictional detective who has featured in comic strips, comics
and novels since 1893. For a full history I suggest looking him up on
Wikipedia. In addition to a number of films, Sexton Blake appeared on
television twice... first as an ITV series that ran for four seasons
from 1967 to 1971 starring Laurence Payne in the title role and then
as a six-part mini-series in 1978 on the BBC titled 'Sexton Blake and
the Demon God' starring Jeremy Clyde in the title role.
There have been hundreds of books and comics issued over the years, most notably The Sexton Blake Library that started in 1915 as small digest size magazines that ran for four series until 1963. I have not collected any of these and they will not be featured here. However, I have collected the Series 5 books that were published from 1965 by William Howard Baker, the then series editor, initially in the Mayflower Books imprint in the UK and then as Howard Baker books. All of the Series 5 adventures were regular-sized paperbacks that were numbered to No 45, sometimes issued twice monthly and ending in 1968. A few further un-numbered novels were published, culminating in (for the 20th Century) the novelisation of the 1978 BBC production. In the US the books were reprinted by Macfadden Books, also numbered but in a completely different order and I do not know how many of these there were. A Sexton Blake comic strip featured in the Valiant comic and annuals from 1968 to 1970. This gallery reflects my collection to date and those I know about that I would like for my collection. = In My Collection / = Not in My Collection |
