Battlestar Galactica was a popular TV single season sci fi series from 1978-1979 that ran for twenty-four episodes and then was cancelled. However a further 10-episode season titled 'Galactica 1980' was aired in 1980 following a write-in campaign to revive the series. There were fourteen books published, the first two by Futura Books, later reprinted by Berkley Books who went on to publish the rest of the series except Book 14 which was published exclusively by Ace Books. The first three books were also reprinted in the UK by Titan Books.

Richard Hatch, who played the part of Apollo in the series, wrote a number of original Battlestar Galactica novels between 1998 and 2005. In addition to the new books, some of the original numbered series were reprinted as "Battlestar Galactica Classics".

In 2004 a 're-imagined' new series of Battlestar Galactica started and ran for four seasons, ending in 2009, totally re-written and re-cast (Starbuck was female in this version). In 2010 there was a prequel series called Caprica that ran for one season (no books published) and a further prequel TV film called Battlestar Galactica : Blood and Chrome in 2012.
