Sam and Silo first appeared as 'Sam and Silo' in 1977 and a book was published by Tempo in 1979. The authors were Mort Walker (of Hi & Lois fame) and Jerry Dumas who first got together in 1961 for a comic strip called "Sam's Strip" from which Sam and Silo is derived. There were at least two books of Sam's Strip published. The strip continues to this day, from 1995 handled by Jerry Dumas alone.
