The
Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was a TV crime drama series made by Granada
Television for ITV between 1984 and 1994 and starred Jeremy Brett as
Sherlock Holmes. There were nine series comprising of 41 episodes with
various series titles... 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes', 'The Return
of Sherlock Holmes', 'The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes' and 'The Memoirs
of Sherlock Holmes', plus 5 feature length specials.
In addition to the ITV series, there was a series of 6 episodes titled "Sherlock Holmes" (1951 BBC) starring Alan Wheatley; a series of 39 episodes titled "Sherlock Holmes" (1954 to 1955) starring Ronald Howard; a series of 13 episodes titled "Sherlock Holmes" (1965) that starred Douglas Wilmer and a second series of 16 episodes titled "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes" (1968) that starred Peter Cushing* (both produced by the BBC); a series of 24 episodes titled "Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson" (1979 - 1980) starring Geoffrey Whitehead, only ever broadcast in the US and featured some re-made episodes from the 1954 series; a four-part series titled "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (1982 BBC) starring Tom Baker; an eight-part series titled "Young Sherlock : The Mystery of the Manor House" (1982 ITV) starring Guy Henry; four series titled "Sherlock" starring Benedict Cumberbatch and seven series titled "Elementary" starring Jonny Lee Miller (the latter three series are featured in their own book galleries). In 1983 there was a children's TV spin-off series titled "The Baker Street Boys" that ran for just eight episodes and featured a gang of street urchins who assisted Sherlock Holmes with some of his cases as well as some of their own - one novel was published. The same theme of a gang who helped Sherlock Holmes was the basis of a Netflix TV series called 'The Irregulars' aka The Baker Street Irregulars that ran for one season of eight episodes in 2021. Sherlock Holmes also appears in the Netflix film series "Enola Holmes" about his younger sister. There was also a number of foreign TV series productions and a number of movies, notably the series of fourteen films starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce between 1939 and 1946, "Sherlock Holmes in New York" (1976) starring Roger Moore and Patrick McNee, "Murder by Decree" (1979) starring Christopher Plummer, "Young Sherlock Holmes" (1985) starring Nicholas Rowe, "Sherlock Holmes" (2009) and its sequel "Sherlock Holmes : A Game of Shadows" (2011) both starring Robert Downey, Jr. and finally a made for DVD movie in 2010 starring Ben Snyder. A very large number of books have been published with Jeremy Brett and other TV and film tie-in covers, including many of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original novels and several novels written by other authors. This gallery reflects just those I know about and is still under construction. *Peter Cushing also starred as Holmes in two movies, "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (1959) and "The Masks of Death" (1984). = In My Collection / = Not in My Collection |
